About: Molino a Vento
In the province of Trapani, Sicily, syrah vineyards belonging to the Di Maria family are planted. The vineyards, Orestiadi, are called after a Sicilian legend and resemble the rich history of the island. The wine domain has a classique look from the outside, but inside it has a modern wine cellar with the newest wine technologies. Here, the Di Maria family produces beautiful wines with local grapes. This is also where the strength of the Sicilian wines lays: in the usage of many local grapes.
During the Roman empire, Sicily was very important for production of wine. Nowadays, the wine production is relatively limited; the cultivation of vegetables and fruits dominates. The geographic location of Sicily is however ideal because of its volcanic ground, which means great fertility and the sun shines the whole year. Previously, wine makers would plant there vines on low terrains however, nowadays they plant their vines on high terrains. Because of this and the use of modern technology, Sicily produces now wines with character.
