Stretch Marks (striae) are welts on the skin that can occur when someone is growing rapidly. Stretch marks are very common and is a harmless condition. Stretch marks often occur among pregnant women.
Stretch marks occur when a body grows faster than the skin can keep up with. This causes the elastic fibres just under the surface of the skin to break, resulting in stretch marks. Growing that fast can leave the body with stretch marks, especially on the belly and breasts, two areas that grow the most. Stretch marks can also show up on the thighs, buttocks, and upper arms. The marks often start out reddish or purple, but after a period of time they gradually fade to white or gray.
